There’s a new trendy, magical hot beverage filling mugs all across the country.
What is this magical elixir? “Bone broth”
Bone broth has been considered as a great healer in many cultures. Because I love my soups…I couldn’t be more excited about this. I read, this “magical” broth helps with leaky gut syndrome, supports your immune system and gives you energy. We all know, when we have a cold, a warm broth make us feel much better right away. I remember my grandma having a big pot of beef bone broth simmering on the stove during the winter months. My favorite part as a young girl was eating the marrow, while my grandpa enjoyed the meat around the bones. After the bone broth was cooked, she used it to make the most delicious dutch pea soup (we call it “snert”).
Ted spent weeks researching on how to make and use bone broth to improve our family’s diet and our café evergreen guests health. To our amazement, this brew is packed with many nutritional benefits. In its’ own right, it is a super food. We had to incorporate this magical, delicious and healthy broth to our menu!
Here are some of the exciting benefits of bone broth and why you should drink beef broth:
- Heals and seals your guts that are not working optimally; this helps cure chronic diarrhea, constipation and even some food intolerances
- Boosts the immune system, because of its high concentration of minerals; a Harvard study showed that somepeople with auto-immune disorders experienced a relief of symptoms when drinking bone broth, with some achieving a complete remission
- Overcome allergic and food sensitivities
- Promotes the growth of healthy bacteria; probiotics
- Helps build bone strength and density; rich in minerals and collagen
- Improves joint health; chondroitin sulfatein bone broth has been shown to help prevent osteoarthritis
- Besides these wonderful benefits it tightens your skin and makes it glow
Doesn’t that sound good?
Bone broths are easy to prepare at home, but are very time consuming. Since we, at café evergreen do the work for you, you don’t have to cook your own beef broth for 8 to 12 hours…come in and try our magical elixir right here at café evergreen.
If you however are not close by right now and want to make this nourishing beef bone broth yourself, here is one quick description on how to get it done:
Once you get the bones, making a basic broth is simple:
Put the bones into a crockpot, cover them entirely with water, add 1/2 cup of vinegar per gallon of water, and let simmer for at least 12 hours. Why vinegar, you might ask. Vinegar helps to extract the minerals from the bones. This way you will get all the beneficial minerals from the bones pulled into your broth.
Remember: the longer you simmer the broth, the better it will be. After a minimum of 12 hours add all the vegetables and herbs you have laying around, cover the pot and bring to a gentle boil, then let simmer for another 30 minutes. Add more water if necessary to ensure the bone bones and vegetables are fully covered by water at all times. Remove the pot from the heat and let the broth cool slightly. Then strain your broth using a fine-mesh sieve and discard bones and vegetables. Let continue to cool until barely warm, then fill in smaller containers to refrigerate or even freeze. You can remove solidified fat from the top of the chilled broth, if you like to do so.
I promise, your home will smell wonderful and you’ll end up with a nutritious drink or soup base.
Don’t forget: Your broth can be stored for up to 5 days in the refrigerator and up to 6 months in the freezer.
